BELMAR — The mayor and council, after previously proclaiming the month of May as First Responders Month, hosted the first annual First Responders Flag Raising Celebration last week on Wednesday, May 1 in honor of the borough’s dedicated first responder force.
In front of borough hall last Wednesday afternoon, a crowd gathered for a brief dedication honoring the hardworking individuals in the community who dedicate their lives as first responders.
The flag-raising ceremony was followed by a touch-a-truck event for younger participants. Additionally, younger attendees were able to take home their share of goodies, including safety vests, plastic firefighter hats, whistles, stickers and bracelets, to become honorary junior first responders for the day.
The ceremony began just after 4 p.m., as the fire department received a call just before the event was set to begin. Following the fire department’s return, Special Events Coordinator John Walsh led the crowd in an acapella rendition of the national anthem, which was concluded with a round of applause.
