POINT PLEASANT — Alpha Delta Kappa, the international honorary organization for women educators, hosted a yard sale in Brielle over the weekend, raising money for local scholarships.
This organization is made up solely of women educators, some who are retired. The chapter that is based in the Point Pleasant area is known as the Alpha Delta Zeta chapter. There are more than 1,000 chapters all around the country.
Mary Lynn Ritchings, treasurer, told The Ocean Star, “Our chapter is dedicated to the Point Pleasant Beach/Borough area. Our members consist of educators who teach in the local schools or they are residents in the area.”
Currently, there are about 13 members to this chapter who work to help raise money for scholarships and other programs.
“Throughout the year, we participate in altruistic activities and fundraisers that benefit our scholarship program. That is why we had the yard sale this past weekend,” said Ritchings.
On Friday and Saturday last week, the yard sale “opened” its doors, where plenty of residents stopped by to not only support their scholarship program, but to also get their hands on some possible good finds.
Over the two days, over $1,000 was raised from the sale.
Ritchings said, “Getting involved with the community is so important. We support St. Gregory’s Pantry, we do backpacks for school children in need, we do Easter baskets at Easter time and donate them for families that are needy. This is just part of our mission to help out the community and world-understanding. We really enjoy doing this and love to support teachers in their educational programs.”
