POINT PLEASANT — During last week’s heatwave and power outage, the borough opened the doors of municipal hall, hosting a cooling center for residents. The borough is prepared to re-open the cooling center, as necessary, throughout the summer.
When temperatures climbed close to the 100s, power went out for approximately a quarter of the town. In response to this, the borough, alongside the Point Pleasant Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and police department, allowed residents to rest and cool within the air-conditioned walls of municipal hall.
Mayor Robert Sabosik told The Ocean Star, “JCP&L had a sequence of events that impacted northern Ocean County, southern Monmouth County in a rather negative way during the heatwave. They had four or five different incidents that affected the safety of the transmission of electricity, so as they repaired some things, we were shut down for a while.”
He said, “We agreed, since it was over 100 degrees, for the safety of our residents, to open up borough hall to have a cooling area for our residents.”
Mayor Sabosik said concerns over the extreme heat, especially in regards to residents with health issues or medication conditions, led to the borough opening its doors to the residents.
“We wanted to give our residents an environment where they can come to cool down and relax in a safe environment within our courtroom,” said the mayor.
If a situation similar to this were to happen again, Mayor Sabosik said it is not out of the question to do something similar in hosting a cooling center.
