BRICK TOWNSHIP — The annual flag-raising ceremony on Sixth Avenue in Normandy Beach will be held this year beginning at 1 p.m. on July 4 with the American Legion riding their motorcycles down the avenue.
The ceremony is hosted by Bob Mrozek and will feature a fly-over by the Black Sheep Squadron and bagpipes by the Shamrock and Thistle Pipe Band. About 70 veterans are expected to be honored.
Mrozek said, “The thing I like the most about this event is seeing the veterans march out in front of the crowd.”
Mrozek is a Brick Township resident and a veteran who served as a first lieutenant from 1961 to 1963 in Korea.
He holds the flag-raising ceremony annually on his property, with the purpose to honor veterans and America.
According to Mrozek, the ceremony started over 39 years ago with 15 guys sitting in his backyard, wondering what they were going to do for the Fourth of July. After deliberation among the group, it was decided that they would get their fathers to put on their service uniforms and have them raise the flags.
Each year the event draws a crowd of around 1,000 people who cheer on the veterans as they march.
