SPRING LAKE HEIGHTS — The Spring Lake Heights School Board of Education (BOE) met on Monday, June 23, for its regularly scheduled meeting and to honor two beloved teachers, John Kurisack and Melinda Schonberg, as they enter retirement. The gymnasium of the Spring Lake Heights school, where the meeting was held, was filled with friends, family, former students and colleagues who celebrated the combined 47 years of teaching service.
Superintendent John Spalthoff spoke a few kind words for Schonberg, who taught fifth-grade and sixth-grade mathematics, along with geometry, for 21 years. “Tonight we gather to honor and celebrate a remarkable educator, a passionate mentor and truly unforgettable member of the Spring Lake Heights community,” Spalthoff began. “Whether she was teaching the fundamentals or diving into the elegant complexities of geometry, her joy for the subject was undeniable,” he continued.
“Melinda understood that teaching is not just about content, it’s about making students feel seen, supported and inspired,” Spalthoff said. During Schonberg’s responding remarks she thanked the community and said, “The kids, that’s why you do it, because you love the kids.”
