WALL TOWNSHIP – The Shore Parkinson’s Group, a free-to-attend weekly program that provides support and resources for those with Parkinson’s and their families, held its summer “FUNdraising” season kickoff event last week for over 50 attendees and supporters.
The Shore Parkinson’s Group (SPG) offers free weekly programs, including vocal and physical exercise, socialization, support and resources that are vital to improving the overall quality of life for people living with Parkinson’s disease. Founded by Carol Krakower, MA, CCC-SLP and Nicole Russo, DPT, the group has grown to include Colleen McCarthy (BA in Education, program coordinator), Liza Clancy, DBH, LCSW (Seasons Psychotherapy and Wellness), and Lauren Greco, BMus (Lauren Greco Vocal Studio – classical vocal training and coaching).
The group meets weekly in the Wall municipal complex from September through June, with its summer meeting home at St. Mark’s Church, 215 Crescent Parkway in Sea Girt.
The group provides opportunities for those with Parkinson’s and their caregivers and families to talk with others, make friends, learn about new research and to participate in physical, voice and singing exercises, as well as counseling support. Founder Russo spoke to The Coast Star about the group and its initiatives.
“The importance of providing programs for people with Parkinson’s to keep them moving and engaged to fight the disease and improve their quality of life,” Russo said. “We also support caregivers and families who are deeply impacted as well. There is strong and growing research showing that movement, speech activities, singing, music, dance and social connection can actually slow the progression of Parkinson’s disease. Beyond the visible symptoms, people with PD often struggle with fatigue, depression and apathy. That’s why offering free Parkinson’s specific programs in a supportive group setting is vital to our community. The Parkinson’s Foundation provides many of the resources we rely on—books, videos, fact sheets, the Aware in Care hospital kit, and educational tools. Our fundraiser helps ensure these resources remain available while also supporting vital research toward better treatments and, ultimately, a cure.”
The kickoff celebration served two purposes – marking the conclusion of the group’s regular season at the Wall municipal building, and launching the group into its summer fundraising initiative. For the kickoff event, over 50 community members gathered to enjoy Parkinson’s-specific programs led by the group’s professional team and a feast of Italian specialties.
“Special thanks to John Morreale and the team at Pastosa’s Ravioli for providing a spectacular spread,” Russo said. “John also shared how Pastosa’s meal planning and delivery services can help seniors maintain independence, making them not just a sponsor but a true partner in caring for our community. The celebration was further enhanced by Nick+Sons Bakery’s fresh pastries and croissants and signature cookies from The Breakers on the Ocean. Perfect Fit Medical Supply kept everyone refreshed with beverages, while Wawa in Manasquan continued their ongoing support of our community by providing the coffee.”
Dr. Michelle Pires-Tiedemann and her team from Current Rehab and Performance also joined the fundraising effort, setting up an informational table and actively assisting throughout the event. Their expertise in neurological physical therapy adds valuable professional support to the Shore Parkinson’s Group community.
“We’re especially grateful to Wall Recreation, particularly Mike Thompson and Leah Wehner, who have provided us with a wonderful space for our weekly gatherings throughout the year. This consistent, accessible location has made a tremendous difference in the lives of people with Parkinson’s and their care partners,” Russo said.
