BRIELLE — The borough council adopted an amended zoning ordinance, which creates a new residential inclusionary housing zone known as the Rathjen Road Inclusionary Housing District (RR-1), at its meeting on June 23.
Business Administrator Thomas Nolan said, “The Housing Element and Fair Share Plan was approved by the planning board on May 13, and it was endorsed by the council on June 9…passage of this ordinance will facilitate the submission of the plan to the state and also will allow us to settle the builder’s remedy suit with Mumford Homes LLC.”
The endorsed affordable housing plan includes Roger Mumford Homes on Rathjen Road, which will have two affordable housing family rental units and seven special-needs bedrooms and three rental bonus credits, totaling 12 credits.
The Mumford Homes site on Rathjen Road is scheduled to have 25 total units, with five being designated for affordable housing.
Brielle resident Debbie Ruckert said, “We have a ton of questions about this because according to the plans they are going to be coming in on Rankin Road and we need to know whether our neighborhoods are going to be able to maintain the traffic.”
Mayor Frank Garruzzo replied and said, “All this does is allow the project and the housing process to go. The specifics, like you’re talking about where you are coming out of, and the drainage, and it has to be sound planning, this just kind of opens the door for the housing project on that location. The zoning board is going to deal with those particulars.”
Ruckert asked if there will be opportunities to ask questions and express concerns on the project.
“You can go to those meetings and speak whatever you’d like to say that you don’t like,” said the mayor.
Ruckert also asked the council where she would be able to submit a petition. The mayor said that the petition could be submitted before the zoning board.
The adoption of the ordinance was approved unanimously by the council. Councilman Timothy A. Shaak was not present at the meeting.
