POINT PLEASANT — Motorists will have to slow down in town, as the mayor and council have adopted an ordinance to lower the speed limit for two major roadways, Bridge Avenue and River Road.
At the June 9 meeting, the mayor and council unanimously adopted an ordinance to lower the speed limit from 35 to 30 mph on Bridge Avenue from Route 88 to Curtis Avenue. The ordinance also lowers the speed limit from 35 to 30 mph for the entire length of River Road, which is approximately 1.5 miles.
No members of the public spoke during the public hearing.
The proposed measure is part of a major public safety initiative that Mayor Robert Sabosik and the borough council launched last year, in collaboration with state Sen. James W. Holzapfel.
Point Pleasant Borough ultimately was awarded $5 million in grants from the New Jersey Department of Transportation for lighted crosswalks, electronic speed limit and speed display signs, possible bike lanes and shared lane markings along Bridge Avenue and Route 88.
The borough is also currently installing sidewalks along the entire lengths of River Road and Herbertsville Road.
“All of the previously mentioned plans are in the final stages of design by our traffic engineers and we are hoping for it all to be completed no later than the fall of 2025,” said Mayor Sabosik. “There was one major piece of the puzzle that we wanted to accomplish and I’m happy to say that the county has finally allowed us to lower the speed limits on both River Road and Bridge Avenue.”
Both River Road and Bridge Avenue are Ocean County roads. Mayor Sabosik added, “We needed their permission to do so and after a few speed studies, we got the final OK to lower both roads to 30 mph in their entirety.”
The Lovelandtown Bridge will remain 35 mph per the county, but on Bridge Avenue, from the bridge all the way down to Route 88, the speed limit will be 30 mph if this ordinance is adopted. This is approximately two miles of roadway.
