POINT PLEASANT — The Point Pleasant Borough mayor and council recently promoted police Sgt. Kevin Aurin to the rank of lieutenant and Cpl. James Kavanagh to the rank of sergeant.
At Monday night’s meeting, Mayor Robert Sabosik said, “Tonight, we get to do one of the most positive things this mayor and council likes to do. We are promoting two individuals who have given a lot of years, hard work and dedication to this town and made this town safer.”
Lt. Aurin is a 1993 graduate of Long Branch High School. He pursued his interest in criminal justice at Ocean County College, where he earned credits towards his degree in the field.
He began his law enforcement career in June 1999 with the Seaside Heights Police Department, serving as both a dispatcher and special law enforcement officer. In Aug. 2007, he joined the Federal Bureau of Prisons. After completing training at the National Training Academy in Glynco, Georgia, he was assigned to FCI Fort Dix as a corrections officer.
Later that year, in Dec. 2007, Lt. Aurin was hired by the Point Pleasant Borough Police Department and assigned to the patrol division. He was promoted to the rank of sergeant in Dec. 2021 and has since served as a supervisor for both the midnight and evening shifts.
“Throughout his tenure with the department, Lt. Aurin has held numerous specialized assignments including patrol officer, field training officer, firearms instructor, taser instructor, narcan coordinator, pistol and rifle armorer and DARE/LEAD instructor,” said the mayor. “In addition to his local instruction, he also serves as a national-level LEAD trainer, educating new officers on the program’s curriculum.”
The lieutenant has been recognized with several honors during his career, including a lifesaving award and multiple commendations. Notably, he received the Paul Harris Fellowship Award, presented by the Point Pleasant Borough Rotary Club.
A longtime resident of Point Pleasant, Lt. Aurin lives with his wife, Laura, and their two adult sons, Christian and Ryan, who are both graduates of the Point Pleasant Borough school district.
Mayor Sabosik further said, “An active member of the community, Lt. Aurin volunteered as a coach for Little League and travel baseball. He has dedicated the majority of his career to working the midnight shift, a choice that allowed him to be present for his children’s events and family gatherings – something he holds dear. His greatest joy continues to be spending time with his family.”
Sgt. Kavanagh is a 1995 graduate of Point Pleasant Borough High School. He went on to attend Rowan University in Glassboro, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in criminal justice.
In July 2002, the sergeant began his career in public service with the federal government, working for the Transportation Security Administration. Following his graduation on Aug. 1, 2004 from the Ocean County Police Academy, he joined the Point Pleasant Borough Police Department. He was initially assigned to the patrol division.
“Throughout his career with the department, Sgt. Kavanagh has taken on a variety of roles, including patrol officer, department vehicle maintenance officer and advisor to the Police Explorer Program. He also served as a member of the Ocean County Regional SWAT Team,” said Mayor Sabosik.
In addition to his operational responsibilities, Sgt. Kavanagh has been an active member of PBA Local #158, where he has held several leadership roles, including secretary, vice president and for 10 years, state delegate.
“Sgt. Kavanagh is a dedicated member of the Point Pleasant community, where he lives with his wife of 21 years, Megan, and their three children: daughter, Leah, and sons, James and Grayson,” said the mayor.
