MANASQUAN — Young anglers were out and about Saturday morning, as the wet conditions did not deter the Manasquan Youth Fishing Clinic from taking over Mac’s Pond.
As the children and their families arrived at the pond, they were met by club members who gave everyone a crash course in the basics of safety and fishing.
Paul Shafer, club president, told The Coast Star, “As a club, we support youth fishing and we conduct several fishing classes and courses over the course of the year. What we found is that young kids between the ages of five and 11 really want to spend time on the water.”
To help with this, the club hosted the clinic to provide safety and instruction tips and to answer questions throughout the morning.
The fishing club chose the location due to the safety, accessibility and variety of species that can be found in the pond. Some of these include catfish, trout, black crappie and sunfish.
While it did begin to rain, kids were getting bites, reeling in a few catfish throughout the day.
One of these kids was Jack Aker, who said he was excited to not only catch the fish, but even more excited to come back and catch more.
Jack’s father, CJ Aker, of Brick, told The Coast Star, “My kids are giving me motivation to get back out there. I grew up across from Manasquan Reservoir so I fished as a kid. Now I got them and they are getting into it…It has gotten me really excited.”
