BRICK TOWNSHIP — Taking the first step to learning about astronomy may be small, but it could be one giant leap for a new interest. Climbing toward the stars, the first observational step for fledgling astronomers is the moon.
The Brick Library invites patrons to join Jim Webster, president of the Astronomical Society of the Toms River Area (ASTRA), for “Beginner Astronomy – The Moon: Our Nearest Neighbor” in the Ocean County Library Brick branch at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 15.
Webster will take attendees through the terrain of this barren satellite that is an indispensable component in the Earth’s delicate life-supporting balance.
According to the library, they will also have a chance to explore simple citizen science projects that you can undertake.
ASTRA, established in 1977, is open to everyone interested in astronomy and space science. Members are of all ages and observational experience levels.
Tom Mongelli, public relations of the Ocean County Library, said in a release, “In addition to his stewardship of ASTRA, Jim transformed his concerns about the impact of light pollution on astronomy and nature into action as a Dark Sky Advocate. Members of Dark Sky International use their skills and passions to advocate for night sky protection and light pollution limits in their communities and beyond.”
According to the library, his dark sky efforts led to Webster’s role as a SciStarter Ambassador, encouraging involvement in citizen science projects in communities.
SciStarter digitally connects citizen science activities nationwide to record astronomy study patterns, encourage engagement and cultivate interest.
