SEA GIRT — The Sea Girt Conservancy, an organization dedicated to maintaining and improving the borough’s open spaces, has big plans for the spring season including some annual cleanups with community members, ongoing projects and opportunities for residents to get involved.
The annual Mulch Madness cleanup effort is set for this Saturday, April 26, from 9 to 11 a.m. at Station and Edgemere parks. The group will meet at Station Park, across from the school basketball courts, in preparation of the spring season.
The event is seeking volunteers to assist the conservancy in ridding the garden beds of both parks from plant debris and invasive species in preparation to lay down fresh mulch.
“They (needed areas) increase…every year they need mulch, but as we restore certain areas, then those areas will need to be included in our mulching,” said Donna Thurston, Sea Girt Conservancy member.
It is asked that volunteers bring a shovel, rake and gloves. At the start of the cleanup, coffee and donuts will be provided by the conservancy.
ADOPT-A-GARDEN
The newly established “Adopt-A-Garden” program welcomes community members to take responsibility for the maintenance and beatification of designated garden areas within the borough.
“That was the brainchild of our newest members, Marjorie Kane and Rich Della Rocca. They came up with this idea to get people more interested,” said Thurston. “Our scope is so large with these large tract of lands, that we thought if we could get families interested in just these smaller plots, and take ownership in maintaining and caring for those plots.”
