SPRING LAKE HEIGHTS — The Independent Fire Co. 1 of Spring Lake Heights hosted a park-wide Easter egg hunt at Joseph E. Robertson Park on Saturday, bringing the community together for some fun in the sun just before Easter Sunday.
The event is hosted entirely by the fire company, which buys all the eggs and chocolate for the kiddos at the hunt. Lt. Casey Willms spoke to The Coast Star about the joy the event brings to residents this time of year.
“We have been doing this egg hunt for decades, and it’s great,” Willms said. “We do it at this park every year, and we love to see all of the families come out. It’s a small town thing, and it’s great to see all of the kids and their families taking pictures and things like that.”
On the enjoyable yet unexpected 80-degree April day, eggs were sprinkled heavily all around the park, including on the pickleball courts, the playground and even the back tree-filled area for determined egg hunters to explore. With a firetruck siren sounding at high noon, children were able to hit the ground running in their pursuit. Participants who located a golden egg were able to redeem it for a large chocolate bunny, regarded as the prized possession of the day.
Willms said the event is a great opportunity for residents and their families to have a relaxing and festive day before Easter.
“We can really sit back and let the families enjoy themselves, and do something nice for the people,” Willms said. “We can connect with the community, walk around, see all of the families and get to know more residents.”
