BRIELLE — The borough council has announced an informational forum on the inclusion of 636 to 638 Borrie Ave. in the borough’s proposed affordable housing plan, to be held at Borough Hall, 601 Union Lane at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 29.
The council members, at their April 14 meeting, said that attending the April 29 meeting will be Brielle’s affordable housing planner, Kendra Lelie, and Chris Pugliese of the Affordable Housing Alliance, to explain the concept and answer any questions and address any local concerns.
During the open public comment portion of the April 14 meeting, borough resident Jaclyn Terry said, “Myself and numerous of my neighbors are here to obtain answers with regard to the Affordable Housing Compliance Plan that Kendra Lelie reviewed on March 26. On behalf of myself and our neighbors, we would like to say that we are not against affordable housing. We believe that every town including Brielle should comply with the affordable housing requirements, but we are against illogically placed and scaled housing in Brielle.”
Terry said that affordable housing should be placed in a “thoughtful manner and not in a haphazard manner.”
“The plan to develop Borrie is illogical…there are other places in Brielle that are more suitable for high-density living and other places that already contain multi-family buildings,” she said.
Terry asked the council if the meeting on April 29 will be an open meeting. The council said that the meeting will be an informal information meeting that is open to the public.
Terry also asked the council about what criteria they would use to know if they were going to endorse the plan.
Thomas Nolan, business administrator of Brielle said, “They would probably rely on the expert testimony of their people that they’ve hired for this purpose in Jeffrey Surenian (affordable housing attorney) and Kendra Lelie.”
According to Nolan, the project does not have to be in accordance with the borough’s master plan, but does have to be done with sound planning principles.
