SPRING LAKE HEIGHTS — The Spring Lake Heights Borough Council Monday night voted to make amendments to existing chapter bylaws of its borough code, some being updated nearly 40 years since adoption.
SIDEWALK CONSTRUCTION
Council members voted to amend Chapter 22, Section 507 of its borough code titled “Curb Cuts, Driveway Aprons, Curbs, Driveways, Sidewalks and Patios.” Following the amendment, a requirement for construction is to make a payment into the borough’s sidewalk capital construction fund.
The amendment states that developers will now pay “$25 per square foot of newly developed sidewalk.” Previously, payment for construction was “equal to the reasonable cost” of installation.
It also scraps the requirement for the borough engineer to determine the price of installation based on various estimates and documentation from the developer.
VETERANS PROPERTY TAX EXEMPTION
Council members established a policy deeming 100% disabled veterans eligible for property tax exemption, the first of its kind in borough history.
The policy is now a section in the code’s Chapter 16, “Taxation,” and states that “all qualified 100% disabled veterans owning a taxable dwelling house in the Borough of Spring Lake Heights shall be eligible for a property tax exemption upon completion of the necessary application…filed to with Borough Tax Accessor.”
Councilman William Graetz motioned the ordinance to adopt the policy, seconded by Councilwoman Sara King. The council voted in favor unanimously.
