SPRING LAKE — Members of the Spring Lake Volunteer First Aid Squad shared their 2024 report and thanked officials, law enforcement and fellow members for their ongoing support and efforts at Tuesday evening’s council meeting.
Spring Lake First Aid Squad Capt. Howard Rockhill led the discussion, alongside President Andrea Rodgers, and shared data on monthly and yearly statistics, and their continued efforts to garner more members through community outreach.
“This year, as it has been for the past few years, has been a challenging year, with COVID-19, RSV and flu seasons, all very much present in our communities,” said Rockhill.
“This year, we celebrate 97 years of continued service to our communities. We…are proud to continue to serve our communities, patient care at no cost to our patients, 24/7, 365 days a year,” he added.
In 2024, the squad responded to 1,107 total calls for service. Of these, there were 346 first aid calls in Spring Lake and 438 in Spring Lake Heights. The squad went to 202 fire calls in Spring Lake and 120 in Spring Lake Heights.
Between both towns, the squad traveled a total of 8,187 miles.
By year end totals, the top five call answerers were Rockhill in first place with 671 calls, Rodgers in second place with 415 calls, Brian Granstrand in third place with 410 calls, Pete Cahill in fourth with 401 calls and Jim McLoughlin in fifth with 372.
The squad will continue to spread the word about who they are and what they do.
In the hopes to gain new members, the squad plans to continue community outreach with visits to local groups and organizations, around-town posters, open houses, a mobile recruitment sign and letters included alongside residents’ water and tax bills.
