BELMAR — The borough council, at its last meeting Tuesday night, adopted an ordinance amending borough code regarding employment schedules, fixing and determining salaries of certain employees in the borough.
Mayor Gerald Buccafusco, during the meeting workshop discussion, clarified that while the ordinance does insert some new positions into the borough code, such as the new marina supervisor position, not every new line in the ordinance relates to a new role in the borough.
“They’re technically not new positions, meaning there are not new people being hired, but we’re trying to bring in line the facts that exist now, in terms of our personnel, and bring it in line with what we have on our schedule,” the mayor said.
For example, the position of EMS assistant coordinator, Mayor Gerald Buccafusco explained, “on the ordinance it looks like a new position, but it is not a new position. There’s a person already serving in that position with that title, but the title doesn’t appear on the list of approved titles, so we had to add that.”
The role of marina supervisor, he continued, is a new title. “I don’t know if everyone understands that these are just titles, they’re not necessarily filled positions.”
Some titles, such as assistant finance officer and deputy director of information technology, are on the schedule but are not currently established roles in the borough. “Those are examples of, there are things on here that are just titles and salary ranges, it does not necessarily mean that we have a person in that position,” Mayor Buccafusco said.
The role of chief lifeguard off-season role “is just putting down on paper what has been happening in reality for the past number of years. The Chief Lifeguard works for a period of time on salary, and then there’s a period of time before the season and after the season, where hours that are put in are paid on an hourly basis, so all we’re doing here is documenting and putting on paper what the reality is.”
“This is nothing new, it’s been done for years and years, but we’re just putting it down on paper so everyone sees what it is,” the mayor said.
