SPRING LAKE — For yet another year, the players of St. Catharine School girls basketball team baked and delivered Christmas treats to homeless men who reside at Market Street Mission emergency shelter in Asbury Park.
Each year, as part of the basketball team’s service project, the team joins together around the holidays to bake a spread of homemade desserts for the men’s dinner service.
Market Street Mission – formerly known as Jersey Shore Rescue Mission – is a free addiction-recovery program for men seeking help with substance abuse addiction by providing food and shelter, spiritual guidance and Bible study, counseling, education and job training. Market Street Mission is located on Memorial Drive in Asbury Park.
Ten of the 11 team members got together at eighth-grade team captain Fiona Shaughnessy’s house to bake two dozen brownies, eight dozen cookies and four dozen cupcakes. The baked goods were then hand-decorated with Christmas-colored sprinkles and icing.
“I am beyond proud of these girls and how well they work together both on and off the court,” said Erin Janides, St. Catharine’s School girls’ basketball coach.
“They look forward to this service project every year. They all jumped on board without hesitation. We discuss as a team the importance of giving back and helping one another. We realize how fortunate we are and that we should never take any opportunity for granted,” she added.
