BRICK TOWNSHIP — The township held its annual menorah lighting on Dec. 26, the second night of Hanukkah, when residents gathered at the municipal building to celebrate the Festival of Lights.
This year, Hanukkah began on Dec. 25 and ended on Jan. 2.
Rabbi Robert Rubin of Temple Beth Or, who led the celebration, told The Ocean Star, “It’s a good annual thing to do and I look forward to it every year. My favorite part about the event is having the community come together and sharing the holiday together.”
During the celebration, songs were sung, Rabbi Rubin demonstrated multiple dreidels and menorahs were lit.
The event included the lighting of three menorahs – one belongs to Rabbi Rubin, another was a large electric installment perched next to the municipal complex sign outside the building and a third was built by late Brick Township resident Richard Gross.
Mayor Lisa Crate told The Ocean Star, “I love that this is an opportunity for us to come together and celebrate Hanukkah and have Rabbi Rubin here, which is wonderful. I always learn something new every year and we always have a nice group come from the community every year.”
According to the rabbi, Hanukkah has many different messages, including religious freedom and the acceptance of others.
