SEA GIRT — Registration is now open for the Sea Girt Patriot Polar Plunge, which is returning once again to the Beacon Boulevard beachfront on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 10:30 a.m.
Held annually for the past four years at 2 Ocean Ave., the plunge honors and remembers New Jersey State Trooper and National Guardsman Juan Fajardo, and raises funds to provide home improvements and repairs to area veterans through the LIFT Fund for Veterans at Monmouth Habitat for Humanity.
Interested participants can register for the plunge online at patriotpolarplunge.com, where additional information can also be located. It costs $50 per person, before a price increase after Dec. 31.
All who register by Friday, Jan. 10, will get a custom hoodie sweatshirt and entry into the after-party at Rod’s Tavern, located at 507 Washington Blvd., which includes a breakfast buffet immediately after the plunge.
“We’re proud to honor Juan (Fajardo) and help our local heroes who may need a hand to stay in their homes safely and affordably,” said Mike D’Altrui, event coordinator and Sea Girt Recreation Commission Chair, in a statement shared with The Coast Star. “Sea Girt Recreation and the Borough host the Patriot Polar Plunge, but it’s really a partnership with Monmouth County Habitat for Humanity, the NJ State Police and New Jersey National Guard.”
To date, over $100,000 has been raised by the plunge, with last year seeing over 500 attendees and spectators, according to D’Altrui, who said he is expecting the turnout to expand even larger this year.
D’Altrui added that even those who don’t choose to take part in the ocean plunge, are encouraged to register, grab a hoodie, show their support from the sidelines and partake in the after-party, adding, “Even if you don’t jump in the ocean, it’s worth coming to see the pageantry and feel the positive energy of the crowd.”
