AVON-BY-THE-SEA — Two Avon-By-The-Sea educators – Pre-K Teacher Erin Blaney and Reading Specialist/Interventionist Sharon Cumiskey – were recognized at last Wednesday’s board of education meeting, as Teacher of the Year and Education Services Professional of the Year, respectively.
The two were awarded these recognitions for 2024 through the statewide Governor’s Educator of the Year (GEOY).
They were honored at the recent board of education meeting on Dec. 11 alongside Eileen MacDonald, director of curriculum, instruction and special services and Interim Superintendent/Principal John Russo.
Blaney and Cumiskey were recognized by their colleagues as being exceptionally skilled and dedicated to the students of Avon Elementary School.
“The district is very proud of the hard work and dedication of our faculty and staff, and it is especially awesome when we can celebrate them individually,” Board President William Bing told The Coast Star, following the meeting.
The award winners must demonstrate exceptional skill, expertise in the field, collaboration with colleagues and leadership, according to Russo.
