BRICK TOWNSHIP — Brick resident and business owner Lindsay Woodruff, who has Type 1 diabetes, will be participating in the Chicago Marathon on Oct. 13 as a part of Breakthrough T1D to benefit people with Type 1 juvenile diabetes.
Woodruff has had Type 1 diabetes since she was six years old.
Previously in 2022, Woodruff participated in the New York City Marathon. On participating in this year’s Chicago Marathon, Woodruff said that she is very excited about the opportunity.
Woodruff told The Ocean Star, “This one definitely is new territory for me because it’s not close by. This is my first destination marathon where it wasn’t a car ride away. Being that it’s a World Major marathon event there are over 50k runners from around the globe including elite marathoners, the anticipation and excitement is next level.”
On being a part of Breakthrough T1D, Woodruff said, “Helping people in general and helping other Type 1 diabetics really gives me a sense of purpose. I’m going on my 32nd year living with T1, it is truly a full time job.”
Woodruff explained that people with Type 1 diabetes have to make several hundred additional decisions per day compared to the average person, and the decisions are not just small ones, but ones that keep them alive.
“Anything I can do to show support to the type 1 community makes me feel good and keeps me going. This is my sixth full marathon and being a part of such a big event is like nothing else. The marathon is uncomfortable and difficult at times but finishing and seeing all the runners is next level emotions,” said Woodruff.
Woodruff said that running with the Breakthrough team is an honor.
She said, “I get to meet new people from all over and share stories of common ground. Being able to make connections with people like this is such an important part of life, it brings people together and knowing you’re not alone is priceless.”
