POINT PLEASANT BEACH — Republicans Caryn Byrnes and Art Gant were elected to the Point Pleasant Beach borough council Tuesday night, winning a three-way race that included Democrat Larry Schwartz.
With all four voting districts reporting, Mr. Gant led with 928 votes in unofficial results reported by the Ocean County Board of Elections. Ms. Byrnes was second with 808 votes, allowing her to hold her council seat. Mr. Schwartz received 719 votes.
Two seats were on the ballot, one being vacated by Council President Doug Vitale, who won an uncontested race for mayor Tuesday, and the seat retained by Ms. Byrnes.
Nearly six percent of the votes cast for council went to write-in candidates, for a combined total of 153 votes.
As mayor, Mr. Vitale will succeed fellow Republican Paul Kanitra, who won a State Assembly seat Tuesday. Mr. Vitale received 1,229 votes.
