AVON-BY-THE-SEA — Leaving their first attempt at a supplemental ordinance to the borough’s existing alcohol law behind, the Avon Commissioners introduced a new version during their board meeting on Monday night.
Ordinance No. 15-2023 features some changed language from its earlier draft but is “basically very similar,” said Mayor Ed Bonanno.
With “yes” votes from Mayor Bonanno and Commissioner Robert Mahon and a “no” vote from Commissioner John Magrini, the ordinance will have a public hearing and final vote at the next meeting on Sept. 25.
The ordinances follow the planning board’s issuance of a use variance to approve a seasonal liquor license for 320 Main Street Hospitality LLC. The company is converting a former PNC Bank building into a restaurant with a small bar that could serve patrons while waiting for a table.
During the public comment section of the meeting, which had more audience members than there were seats available, multiple residents expressed concerns over how the presence of an establishment that serves alcohol would affect their lives, be it from late-night loud noise or from the proposed establishment’s proximity to the Avon-By-The-Sea Elementary School.
