BELMAR — Some 2,200 runners lined up at Ocean and Second Avenues this Labor Day weekend, to cap off the summer running season by testing their speed in Belmar’s yearly Five-Mile Run.
On Saturday, what was perhaps the coolest morning of the summer provided a gorgeous backdrop to the annual Belmar Five-Mile Run, a scenic race around the ‘beautiful sea’ borough. The five-mile course took runners down Ocean Avenue, around Lake Como, back up Ocean, around Silver Lake and finally east to the finish line on Fifth Avenue, facing the ocean.
Runners from all over the country participated, with 2,255 registrants snagging a bib for the chance to improve their personal bests, run for a cause or just for recreation. Regardless, the winners of the race were announced about half an hour after the starting gun, which went off at 8 a.m.
The overall female winner was Erika Fluehr, 30, of Atlantic Highlands, who finished with a blistering time of 28 minutes flat. The overall male winner—and overall race winner—was Trevor Conde, 34, of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, with a mind-boggling 24 minutes and 32 seconds.
Placing second and third place for the women, respectively, were Alyssa Condell of Runnemede with a time of 29 minutes and 15 seconds and Jessica Francis of Brick, with a time of 29 minutes and 38 seconds. For the men, second and third place were Seth Slavin, also of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, with 24 minutes and 37 seconds, and Justin Kelly of Marlton with 24 minutes and 42 seconds.
