POINT PLEASANT — The borough council has unanimously adopted an ordinance setting regulations for e-bikes, after weeks of comments from the public and members of the council.
“It is really tough in town now because the e-bikes are patrolling our roads. They are very dangerous…so hopefully what we pass tonight will help control this a little bit, or a lot,” said Councilman Joe Furmato during committee reports.
Operators of e-bikes are now required to obey all traffic laws and to ride as near to the side of the roadway as possible, not in the middle of the road. Lights and reflectors are required and those lights must be visible from at least 500 feet away. Helmets must be worn by all persons under the age of 17, and no persons 14 years of age or older are allowed to operate an e-bike upon any borough sidewalks, nor in any prohibited locations. Some of these prohibited locations include the walking paths around parks in the borough.
The ordinance also prohibits any passengers on the bikes, meaning only one rider in proper seats can operate or ride the bike. Riding on handlebars or any kind of passenger riding are prohibited.
There are penalties for violations in the ordinance. A penalty of $50 may be applied to the first offense with a second going up to $100. No court appearances will be required unless an individual has a third offense or higher.
