BRICK TOWNSHIP — The importance of individual perseverance in an age of “instant gratification” via technology were among the messages that Brick Township High School’s class of 2023 heard during the school’s graduation ceremonies on Tuesday, June 20.
“Today’s graduation ceremony marks a significant milestone in each of your lives — a culmination of years of hard work, personal growth and academic achievements,” Principal David Kasyan told the seniors.
Valedictorian Phaedra Salerno cautioned her classmates that “powerful tools for facilitating research and entertainment … are not infallible … we cannot allow ourselves to rely on them instead of performing work ourselves.”
“It is also important to recognize that relying on technology such as these, we rob ourselves of the process of trial and error of learning to make mistakes and to recover from them and facing real challenges with completing work with integrity.”
Mr. Kasyan also praised the class as a “group of amazing individuals [that] remains humble through achievements, demonstrates selflessness towards others and presents with a high moral standard.”
Ms. Salerno expressed confidence “that if we all work to the best of our abilities we can effect positive change in the world,” but added, “the only way we can accomplish this change is through dedication and determination.”
