SPRING LAKE – The Spring Lake Mayor and Council unanimously passed a revised agreement with The Essex and Sussex [E&S], the former hotel and century-old building located at 700 Ocean Ave. which now serves as a 55+ rental and for-sale condominium community.
The Tuesday meeting built upon an extensive history of negotiations between the borough council and E&S legal representatives who have worked together to ensure that the building is safe for its residents and the nearby Spring Lake community.
In 1997, the Spring Lake Borough Council approved an agreement to convert the Essex and Sussex Hotel into a luxury residence for senior citizens, which officially transitioned in 1999.
William Wolf, the attorney representing the E&S, and Anthony Parrillo, a resident of the community, presented the borough council with a revised settlement agreement since they appeared before the council in September 2022.
The revised settlement agreement, which Mr. Wolf said was the “proposed third amendment” to the original settlement agreement initially established in November, 1997, includes five revisions regarding appliance usage, dining facilities, guest dining policy, E&S events scheduling, and public notice guidelines for possible future revisions.
