POINT PLEASANT BEACH — Lavallette sending school liaison Steve Shohfi recently updated the Point Pleasant Beach Board of Education on rule changes by the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association on the transferring and recruitment of student athletes.
“There were two major rule changes that are resulting in a paradigm shift,” said Mr. Shohfi. “This was not something that was dictated by the NJSIAA, it was voted on by the full membership, around 400 high schools in the state.”
According to Mr. Shohfi, the group has taken the wording ‘bonafide change of residence’ out of the original wording of the Constitution, Bylaws and Rules and Regulations section under ‘Transfers’. The original wording of the section kept students who did not have the address, they would have to sit for 30 days or half the season, whichever is shorter. The new rule will now allow for students to get one free transfer with no penalty.
The second rule change will now allow high school teachers and coaches to now recruit eighth grade students.
“In the past a lot of public school coaches felt they were getting the short end of the stick,” said Mr. Shohfi. “Students would go visit private schools as they were looking for an alternative to go to high school and that grade was able to be spoken to by the teachers and coaches there like an open house. Whereas right in the district, high school coaches were not allowed to talk to their own eighth graders…that is now changed.”
The school district Superintendent also announced the HIB (Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying) self-assessment for the 2021-2022 school year during their meeting on Tuesday night, with a score of 77 out of 78.
“There is always room to grow and room to improve,” said superintendent Smith. “We are happy with the score and have always been around that point.”
