BAY HEAD — The Bay Head Beautification Committee has placed 32 Memory Benches around Bay Head to recognize loved ones who have passed away while giving people in the area a place to sit and enjoy the borough.
“Bay Head Beautification has been discussing a Memory Bench Program in our town for several years now,” said Recreation Committee Liaison and Councilwoman Holly MacPherson. “We have, in the past, been asked by residents if they could place benches around town for loved ones that have passed on.
“This was a program that we wanted to do for sometime now, but was never put together…After several conversations with the BHIA, we were given the greenlight to place bench(s) on certain street beach fronts.”
When the committee started the program last fall, letters were sent out to all tax paying residents to invite them to participate. Anticipating a large number of residents showing interest in the ocean front benches, the committee created a lottery system for both refurbished or new benches.
“The Beautification Committee really wanted to do something up at the beach front so people could sit up there and look at the ocean after the beach replenishment and high dunes were placed,” said Ms. MacPherson.
