SPRING LAKE — The Board of Education announced Monday that Daniel Layton will become the new Principal/Supervisor of Curriculum & Instruction at H.W. Mountz School effective July 23. Mr. Layton will receive a salary of $129,750.
Mr. Layton comes to the district with 16 years of experience in education, most recently serving as Principal of Highlands Elementary School for the last five years.
The incoming principal is a former kindergarten teacher and was supervisor of Brick Township schools pre-kindergarten through fifth grade prior to joining the Highlands district.
“What struck us as a committee about Mr. Layton is that [Mr. Layton] checked every single one [of our hiring criteria] – and some of them twice,” said the superintendent.
“I am extremely excited for this opportunity … I think I’m entering into a great, established school that [I] can help bring … to greater heights,” said Mr. Layton. “I’m very grateful.”
Stephen LaValva, who currently serves as both the Superintendent and Principal of the district, will shift into his new dual roles: as Superintendent, effective July 1, 2023 through June 30, 2026, and as Business Administrator for the 2023-24 school year. His salary will be $155,000, as determined by the board at a special meeting on May 15.
Mr. LaValva will replace Interim Business Administrator Joanette Femia.
Mountz Vice-Principal, Natalie Levine, will continue in her role for the coming school year.
Mr. LaValva will serve as Acting Principal of H.W. Mountz School July prior to Mr. Layton’s arrival.
