AVON-BY-THE-SEA — The Avon Pool is being filled this week after weeks of renovation and will be opening on time for the summer season.
“We have been planning to do this since the fall,” said Avon Mayor Ed Bonanno. “We started talking about doing this in the fall. The pool needs to be refinished. The current finish has been in for about 15 years so it lasted a long time. But it was flaking off so we really had to do it.”
Earlier this year, the borough decided the pool would be in need of renovation when some of the tiles began to fall off and the walls began to chip. In the spring, the borough drained the pool and began renovations, when they noticed there was more work to be done than originally anticipated. According to Business Administrator Kerry McGuigan, the original cost of the project was around $43K but could now cost more due to the unforeseen additional renovations.
“The original proposal was to repair and replace the hollow tiles and sections in the pool, when they started going in and started doing that they realized there was more that needed to be done because it was an old pool,” said Ms. McGuigan. “The original proposal was for around $43K. They ended up having to remove all of the tiles on the ‘T’ and off the wall. Then, they did some concrete work on the inside on the walls. We are still waiting on the additional cost for that.”
Along with the renovations, the borough also purchased three new ‘state of the art’ canopies to replace the ones on the west, north and south perimeter of the pool. While they have been purchased, they have not been delivered at this time.
