POINT PLEASANT — The Point Pleasant Borough Board of Education was presented with a new reading and writing program that, if adopted, would be implemented into the curriculum this fall.
The Sonday System was unveiled by Christine McCoid, director of curriculum and instruction; Heather Karagias, supervisor of language and social studies; and Robert Dunn, supervisor of pupil personnel services.
The Sonday System is a line of materials and strategies designed to help educators provide multisensory reading instruction to students from pre-K through eighth-grade reading levels.
The system is Orton-Gillingham-based and is geared toward providing student support through small-group and individualized instruction. This approach is a multisensory phonics technique for remedial reading instruction. It is practiced as a direct, explicit, cognitive, cumulative and multi-sensory approach
Furthermore, there are short mastery checks for understanding to assist with pacing, and the system provides intensive reinforcement and practice.
