POINT PLEASANT — The Point Pleasant Borough School District, in conjunction with the Point Pleasant Elks Lodge 1698, hosted a prom for local special needs students on May 4.
Over 15 students from both Memorial Middle School [MMS] and Point Pleasant Borough High School [PPBHS] Life Skills classes attended, accompanied by over 60 student volunteers from regular education programs within the schools.
Ann Gering, teacher of the Life Skills program of PPBHS, said “We want to give [the Life Skills students] the opportunity to just have a great night with their peers and feel included.” Ms. Gering also expressed the amount of love the Life Skills program, and all special needs students in the district, receive in the Point Pleasant area.
“I am never surprised by what the community offers us. You ask for one item, they give you 10. This is an opportunity the community can see what an amazing event that is being put together. This is all community, the Elks, the restaurants, the parents, the teachers and the students.”
Jennifer Nordyk, special education teacher of MMS, said “This is a super-awesome opportunity for our students to socialize and just have a night of fun. Events like this are important because it gets [the students] out into the community and making friends.”
