SPRING LAKE — For more than 20 years, Spring Lake youth and police come together to play an annual Kids vs. Cops basketball game, sponsored by the Drug Prevention Alliance and The Police Department of Spring Lake. This year’s game will take place Thursday, April 20 at 6 p.m. at H.W. Mountz School gym. All are invited to attend the community-oriented, light-hearted game.
Mountz eighth graders will man the court against local police officers – each team determined to give it their all.
“I’m a little out of shape,” said Spring Lake Police Chief Ed Kerr, laughingly.
According to Chief Kerr, the annual tradition started in 1988 when the former D.A.R.E. [now LEAD] program joined forces with Reverend Ray DuBois, pastor at Manasquan United Methodist Church and coordinator for the Drug Prevention Alliance.
According to Reverend Dubois, the game helps to show kids that police officers are everyday people. Many students throughout the district are exposed to who maintain a presence on campus or through drug prevention courses in the classroom.
