AVON-BY-THE-SEA — The Avon-By-The-Sea Education Foundation is offering its annual high school senior scholarship, which started in 2012, to a student who exemplifies the foundation’s mission of leadership, scholarship and community service.
“I thought we needed to reach out to the community itself, not just the schools,” said Avon Education Foundation Vice President Peggy Bonanno. “We wanted a foundation to support everyone.”
The scholarship offers a $1,000 scholarship to one graduating senior, who resides in Avon, and plans to attend an institute of higher learning. Criteria for the scholarship include aspects of community service, peer leadership and extracurricular activities. The scholarship is also contingent on the applicant writing an essay and being accepted into a higher learning institution.
The application period started on Saturday, April 15 and is open until Monday, May 22. Applicants can find the form online at avonbytheseafoundation.org. The board will review the applications from May 22 to May 26, which is when the recipient will be announced. This gives the foundation time to read all essays that have been submitted. According to Ms. Bonanno, the foundation usually received five to seven applications.
