POINT PLEASANT — Boats being rented as living quarters must now follow borough regulations for rental properties.
The borough council, after a public hearing at the April 10 meeting, adopted an ordinance amending Chapter 19 of the Borough Code pertaining to land use.
Borough Administrator Frank Pannuci said the change is “just making the language in the existing ordinance more specific.”
He explained that years ago, many waterfront homes in the town were rented out in the summer as AirBnBs, which resulted in “upsetting the quality of life [of] the town.”
Therefore, a rental period for a minimum of 30 days was mandated years ago to prevent boisterous parties from disrupting the peace in town, he said.
But then, “Some homeowners thought they could skirt that rule because boats weren’t specifically named in the ordinance, so they’ve been renting out their boats as AirBnBs. The ordinance says ‘dwellings,’ which by its definition means ‘any structure that can be lived in or stayed at,’” Mr. Pannucci said.
The amended ordinance now states that boats are included within the existing rental restrictions and owners are now required to follow borough rules when renting them out.
