MANASQUAN — The 126 Jersey Mike’s Subs stores in New Jersey, including locations in Wall, Manasquan and Belmar, are teaming up during March to support The Valerie Fund, a nonprofit that provides support for children with cancer and blood disorders.
Senior Vice President of Jersey Mike’s Systems Inc. Caroline Jones said each owner of the franchises around New Jersey will meet and discuss the charities each would like to donate to, and ultimately vote on which organization will be the recipient of the Month and Day of Giving.
Leah DelPiano, Manager of Event Fundraising for the Valerie Fund, said the relationship between Jersey Mike’s and The Valerie Fund began roughly three years ago, when franchise owner of a few Jersey Mike’s locations Evan Mayer was informed his neighbor’s young son had been diagnosed with cancer. According to Ms. DelPiano, Mr. Mayer would donate portions of profits made on openings or other days of the year in support of The Valerie Fund.
Last year, Jersey Mike’s and The Valerie Fund worked together on a larger fundraiser where customers were able to donate $1, $3 or $5 to the Valerie Fund with the purchase of a sandwich.
Late last year, Ms. DelPiano and all the board members of the Valerie fund received a call by the area directors at Jersey Mike’s to congratulate them on being this year’s month/day of giving organization.
“They surprised us with 126 stores choosing us for the month of giving, which we are super excited about,” Ms. DelPiano said.
The effort is part of Jersey Mike’s annual Month of Giving, which has the chain’s nearly 2,500 U.S. stores working to support some 200 nonprofit organizations by inviting patrons to make donations at participating stores.
The month-long drive will culminate on March 29, with a Day of Giving during which local Jersey Mike’s owners and operators will donate 100 percent of sales proceeds that day to their respective partner charities.
