SPRING LAKE — In order to maximize efficiency, the Spring Lake Fire Department will combine Spring Lake Fire Company No. 1 and Goodwill Fire Co. No. 2 into one operation next month.
A statement issued by the fire department noted the difficulties that a reduced number of available volunteers have created for volunteer departments everywhere and stated:
“We believe this merger can serve as a model for other communities experiencing the same stresses.”
The borough council approved two resolutions to enact the merger during its Feb. 14 meeting. The council also declared the borough’s intent to purchase the current No. 1 fire station building, located at 1107 Fifth Ave., from the fire department.
Councilman Ed Hale, who is also chief of the fire department, said the merger and relocation will “put all of our resources in one place and get the most pieces of equipment on the road as fast as possible.”
The result, he said, will be “a more efficient and economical response, providing the residents with superior fire protection.”
