BRIELLE — The enforcement of changes in Brielle’s brush pickup schedule for the spring and fall months had some residents raising concerns during a borough council meeting on Monday.
Brielle resident Dara Hawthorne asked why the council changed the dates and stopped brush pickup earlier, however Council President Tim Shaak informed the residents that the brush pickup cutoff date has not changed for the last 25 years, however it was more strictly enforced this year.
The borough states that brush pickup is collected from May 15 to Oct. 15 and will be strictly enforced by the borough. Any brush that is left on the curb will not be picked up during the off months and a homeowner could be subjected to a fine.
Although nothing was finalized Monday night, the council agreed to consider extending the cutoff date for next fall and also review the other concerns addressed by residents.
Council President Shaak said, “The changes were made due to the increased cost in brush collection and disposal… We are still working with the DPW [Department of Public Works] to see when we will resume brush pickup in the spring.”
Brielle resident Paul Griffin said his main concern is the cut-off date in the fall, Oct. 15, and asked the council to push back the cut off date to be in November.
Brielle resident Peter Trimmer expressed to the council that people are still putting their brush into the street, with concern that now no one is picking it up.
