POINT PLEASANT BEACH — Demonstrators plan to hit the boardwalk on Sunday to protest offshore wind turbine development that they believe is related to nine shore incidents since Dec. 5 in which dead whales have washed up on beaches — the latest in Manasquan on Monday.
The Save Our Whales rally was announced on social media by Point Pleasant Beach Mayor Paul Kanitra, who has been an outspoken critic of offshore wind projects.
Clean Ocean Action [COA] has issued a statement blaming the recent whale deaths on “the excessive scope, scale and magnitude of offshore wind power plant activity in the region.”
The examination of the Manasquan whale found evidence of a “vessel strike.” However, a full necropsy report stating a cause of death had not been issued as of press time Thursday.
Mayor Kanitra’s post, on Facebook, urged people to come out on World Whale Day, which is Sunday, Feb. 19, to “Save Our Whales, Save Our Ocean and STOP the Wind Turbines.” It states that the the demonstration will begin near Jenkinson’s Aquarium, at about 1 p.m.
