The Bradley Beach Board of Education presented Courtney Hammell, who is Bradley Beach Elementary School Teacher of the Year, and Julie Ferwerda, who is their Education Services Provider of the Year, with certificates at their meeting on Tuesday evening.
Each year, members of the Bradley Beach community nominate teachers and faculty members for the award. Once nominated, a selection committee undergoes a rigorous process where they score nominees based on a criteria that emphasizes high character and exemplary behavior.
When BBES Principal/Superintendent Michael Heidelberg first announced the recipients at the schools winter concert this previous month, the auditorium erupted with applause and cheers from students and faculty alike.
Ms. Hammell, who is in her seventh year teaching at Bradley Beach, currently teaches fifth and sixth grade math. Along with her responsibilities as a teacher, Ms. Hammell previously coached the girls basketball team for four years, and is currently in her sixth year coaching the girls soccer team. Ms. Hammell has also served as the schools athletic director for the past three years.
Ms. Ferwerda has been a speech-language pathologist at BBES for the past 13 years. When Ms. Ferwerda isn’t busy with providing communicative support for students at the school or looking after her four children, she works with graduate students at Monmouth University as an externship supervisor to help future speech pathologists learn new skills.
Before moving on to regular business, the board of Education said it will submit both Ms. Hammell and Ms. Ferwerda to be recognized as the Monmouth County Teacher/Education Services Provider of the Year.
