POINT PLEASANT — One Team Together, a recreation program launched eight years ago, could be defined by many things, such as an opportunity for coaching or a passion for basketball. What sets this program apart, however, is the underlying community spirit that defines the Borough of Point Pleasant.
The program began with an idea dating back to nearly 40 years ago, when current Recreation Coach Val De Noia was approached in middle school by a high school basketball coach to talk about playing at a higher level. Since then, Mr. De Noia has worked to create a bond between players of all ages.
It was when Mr. De Noia approached David Drew, coach of the Point Pleasant Borough High School’s girls varsity team, that One Team Together came to fruition.
“There must have been some divine intervention that allowed Val and I to make a connection,” Mr. Drew said in a previous interview with The Ocean Star. “Val and I attend the same Mass every Sunday morning at Sacred Heart Church in Bay Head with our families. As Val and I would occasionally talk to each [other] after mass about various topics, our conversations soon led to sports, as both of us have that in common.
“I remember telling him a few years ago that I would love to get the high school girls involved with the recreation program in town.”
