BRICK TOWNSHIP — Mayra Gavilanez-Alectus, 49, of Brick Township, was sentenced to 45 years in New Jersey State Prison by Superior Court Judge Honorable Rochelle Gizinski on Thursday, Jan. 12.
Ms. Gavilanez-Alectus has been sentenced due to the murder of her wife, Rebecca Gavilanez-Alectus, which occurred sometime between May 16 and May 17 in 2020 in Brick Township.
According to the Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer, the sentence is subject to the terms of the No Early Release Act, meaning that Ms. Gavilanez-Alectus will be required to serve at least 85 percent of her prison sentence before she may be considered for parole eligibility.
Mr. Billhimer said, “We hope this lengthy prison sentence affords Rebecca’s family some level of peace and closure.”
Ms. Gavilanez-Alectus was found guilty of murder on Sept. 29, 2022, following a nearly three-week jury trial before Judge Gizinski.
The jury also found Ms. Gavilanez-Alectus guilty of possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon.
