WALL TOWNSHIP — Grace McCafferty, 17, at St. Rose High School, is offering free dance lessons to local senior citizens as part of her Gold Award project for Scout Troop 997.
Grace, who has been in Troop 997 since kindergarten, hopes to become a Senior Ambassador, and the Girl Scout Gold Award is the most prestigious award that ambassadors can earn.
About 80 hours is the suggested minimum amount of time for completing various step expected of Gold Award recipients including: identifying an issue, investigating it thoroughly, getting help and building a team, creating a plan, presenting the plan, gathering feedback, taking action and educating and inspiring others.
Grace’s project, called “Dance For Life,” aims to provide a service to both senior and home-bound citizens by giving them dance lessons. Places Grace will provide Dance for Life include Care One in Wall and Holmdel, in addition to the Catholic Daughters of the St. Teresa of Calcutta in Avon.
According to Grace, she wants to “inspire seniors that dance is a lifelong art that can start at any age, and enrich their lives.”
Grace has been busy developing a series of dance routines for in-person and video instruction, which she brings to local Care Facilities. She also provides video lessons to home-bound citizens. Helping Grace with her project are choreographers from Studio 7 and her St. Rose High school teachers.
Part of the Gold Award is for the service to be sustainable and have a lasting impact. To do this, Grace is developing videos that will be accessible for generations to come, which she says will be updated with new fitness trends and safety precautions.
