WALL TOWNSHIP — “Roo,” a Hungarian Komondor owned by lifelong Wall residents Scott and Denise Wilczewski, made his Westminster Kennel Club dog show debut from June 20 to 22.
Traditionally held at Madison Square Garden, the show was moved to the Lyndhurst Estate at Tarrytown, NY in June due to COVID.
Having placed second overall in the Hungarian Komondor breed last year at the American Kennel Club Championship at just 9-months-old, Roo, along with the other top five of his breed, got the chance to compete at the Westminster Kennel Club dog show.
Roo took home the ribbon for Select Breed, which is similar to Awards of Merit in that this dog is the next best as far as the quality of the dogs in competition. These awards are selected after Best of Breed/Variety and Best of Opposite Sex.
Despite not winning best of breed, Ms. Wilczewski is still very proud of Roo, who, at two years old, was the youngest of his breed represented at Westminster this year.
“I knew he wasn’t going to win the breed because the dog that won the breed had been out at dog shows for five years,” said Ms. Wilczewski.
“I didn’t really expect him to do much there because he just turned two years old yesterday, and in Komondor years, that’s like a toddler. He was at a disadvantage compared to the older dogs because judges pay attention to the dog’s coat length.”
