BRICK TOWNSHIP — Mayor John Ducey said Thursday that he was disappointed to hear that Corrado’s Market will not be opening in the former Pathmark supermarket site in Laurel Square Plaza next month. Owners of the site confirmed Monday that Corrado’s has been evicted for non-payment of rent.
Mayor Ducey told The Ocean Star that both he and members of the community had been “excited” at the prospect of having a Corrado’s Market in the former supermarket site. However, he said he had come to suspect problems with the planned opening because Corrado’s had not returned his phone calls since December.
An eviction notice posted at the site’s entrance cites state law covering “landlord tenant cases arising out of non-payment or habitually late payment of rent owed.”
Brixmor Property Group, owner of the Laurel Square property, issued a statement saying, “We are extremely disappointed in this outcome. We’ve been patiently working with Corrado’s for more than three years and the Brixmor Property Group has personally invested $3 million in an effort to bring a quality grocer to serve the Brick community. Unfortunately, we were no longer in a position to continue moving forward.”
Brixmor Square has, in the meantime, begun negotiating with alternate retailers in Brick in hopes to set up a new grocery market.
Representatives from Corrado’s did not return requests for comment.
The former Pathmark supermarket space of approximately 30,000 square feet had been slated to become Corrado’s newest food market since January 2020 when the new tenant was first announced.
