BRIELLE — Brielle resident, Grant Smith, achieved his Eagle Scout rank this year through implementing a litter abatement program in Brielle. Mr. Smith is part of the Brielle Boy Scout Troop #63 and partnered with the non-profit organization, Leave Only Your Footprints (LOYF) to establish a program involving signage throughout Brielle that aims to change the way that residents think about litter and interact with their local environment.
Mr. Smith worked with Bob Duerr, president of LOYF to develop a schedule and list of steps to gain approval to install LOYF signage throughout Brielle.
The list included producing a wayfinder map of suggested signage placement with pictures and samples of placement; making a formal presentation to the Mayor and Borough Council; coordinating with a point of contact from the Brielle for the installation schedule; as well as obtaining all the signage, paint, and hardware for installation.
Additionally, Mr. Smith was responsible for delegating placement of signage to his troop members; ensuring that the final placement follows the LOYF guidelines for long term viability of the signage; and for producing an overview inclusive of media to support the fine placement of the program.
