BRIELLE — The Brielle Chamber of Commerce hosted its 18th annual Family Fishing Tournament Friday, June 10 through Sunday, June 12. The event kicked off on June 11, with a captain’s meeting at Rella’s Italian Tavern on Thursday, June 9 from 5-7 p.m. and featured three days of competitive fishing. There were 20 boats participating in the event, and a good time was had by all.
“It was an excellent event,” said Heidi Wittenberg, a member of the Brielle chamber of commerce fishing tournament committee. “We were so excited to host the event again this year and we had a beautiful weekend for it.”
She continued, “We started the competition 18 years ago to celebrate our town’s rich fishing history. Brielle was known as one of the top sport fishing locations in the world. This tournament is a great opportunity to get the whole family involved in the sport. A highlight every year is seeing the kids’ faces light up when they bring their fish in to be weighed and measured at the docks.”
Anglers were able to fish any or all of the three weekend days of the tournament, with one goal in mind: catch the biggest fish. Participants started from Captain Bill’s Landing in Point Pleasant Beach and checked in there throughout the weekend to measure their catch.
At the end of the weekend, awards were presented to participants who caught the largest fish in each of the three categories: Striped Bass, Bluefish and Fluke. Participants were divided into Adult and Junior Angler categories, with those 14 years old and younger considered for the Junior Angler category.
