WEST LONG BRANCH — Caps flew on Tuesday evening after the St. Rose High School Class of 2022 concluded their graduation ceremony held at Monmouth University.
Hundreds of friends, family, colleagues and staff members stood as the soon-to-be graduates, draped in purple and gold robes and caps, walked down the aisle to Pomp and Circumstance, performed by the John Luckenbill Orchestra.
Rev. Msgr. Edward J. Arnister of the St. Rose Parish began the procession with an opening prayer, sharing sentiments of gratitude and giving back.
“Give back,” he said. “Give back to your school, give back time, give back prayers…You may think once you get out of here, you’re done with St. Rose, but trust me, St. Rose is not going to leave, St. Rose will never leave.
“Give back and come back,” he continued. “There is nothing like teachers who get to see their graduates come back to tell them stories of college, or work, or family or children.”
Following the Monsignor’s prayer, Class of 2022 valedictorian Lucas Escandon was invited to the stage to speak to the graduates. He spoke of challenge and perseverance.
“We may think we know what the future holds, but none of us know for sure,” he said. “Come August, many of us will be scared freshmen again, in a whole new place… some of us may be in the military serving our country, others learning a new trade.
“No matter where we are next year, we will face challenges… Many people will be intimidated or scared facing a challenge,” he continued. “I want you to remember this: do not be afraid of any challenge. They are what got you where you are today, you’re going to face many more and will only make you stronger.”
Lucas Escandon accepted his valedictorian award after his speech, followed by Isabella Stevens accepting her salutatory award.
Additionally, Luke Hamill received the Bishop Ahr Award, Derrick Hope received the Principal Leader award and Genna DeLuca received the outstanding improvement award.
